Choosing a real Christmas tree over a fake tree is still the environmentally sound choice, so long as it is from a reliable source - apparently three saplings are meant to be planted in place of each one that gets cut down (I say apparently 'cos I can't prove this one way or the other).
Fake trees, most of which are manufactured in Korea, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, consist of plastics and metals that aren’t biodegradable.
When disposed of, the fake trees will never deteriorate.
