Someone once said that they microwaved the toilet rolls for 15 seconds to zap any germs... but not sure where I heard it or even whether it works.

Hey, my post vanished! This happens from time to time. Anyone else have a similar problem?

(I wrote a fairly detailed post about school art lessons. )

Now there's an idea. It gets b***** freezing in our bathroom - literally as the cisten freezes solid - so perhaps popping the loo roll in the microwave would provide a little extra comfort on those cold mornings...

I'd like kids to be taught that art is a subjective thing, there are no rules and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

my brothers currently have the same art teacher I did at their age and their creativity at school is slowly being crushed by her obsession with multicoloured cross-hatching.

Oliver is an amazing budding graphic artist specialising in wierd manga-style monsters, and Tom is a photographer (I'm sure it's in the blood) who's photoshop and digital manipulation skills are coming on a treat thanks to PixelPerfect with Bert Monroy (that man is my god!!), www.Myjanee.com and my own collection of 3 years worth of photoshop tutorial magazines. But, due to their individual styles and them not conforming to her idea of what art essentially is, they are getting terrible grades. Tom didnt take art for fear of getting her again and Ollie is getting more and more depressed about a lesson which he used to thrive in.

I am so sorry to hear that MrsFibble! I agree with you that art is subjective, even when I did my degree in Fine Art, your mark was very dependant on whether the tutor liked it or not.
The only way anything will change is if the govornment stops assessment altogether. I think it would be better if pupils recieved evaluations and discussed with the teachers and other pupils how sucessful their work is, rather that one person (the teacher) deciding.
Some teachers have strange ideas about what their pupils should do, and often their stregnths dont fit in with what the teacher thinks they should be doing, its such a shame, there are so many kids who give up on art because they are forced to do things they dont like, rather than focusing on their stregnths.

Its not just art...ask Niki about her music teacher, and i've had the same problem with English essays in the past - if you don't use the keywords, or write what the teacher agrees with, you're stuffed!

yep, been there too. My brothers are both getting loads of support at home for their own special brands of artwork so they're not missing out. I didn't discover my strengths until I got to uni. photography and the accompanying photoshop module were all i was good at on that course.
