interesting - I have acid soil here.. well there are rhodies growing.. and its typical with the granite rock around...
and this is the first time I have had signs of magnesium deficiency in tomatoes... (cured with some organic feed)
In my last place. I NEVER fed the tomatoes and always had a good crop - but before planting i would pile in home made compost. and into my compost bin went all of the woodash from my woodburning stove... which ties in with what Nev said

thing is - I never did test the soil.. i just found out what did work and what did not by trial and error - and only found out some things were supposed to be tricky *after* I had done them

so whilst its good to be informed sometimes, then again sometimes hopeful ignorance wins through.
