how do you use a fan oven ?!?!?!

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

I said 20C which is defining my units! I have never lived in the land of F where ovens are concerned!

Oh dear, that sounds almost rude!

But I must admit, Fahrenheit is the one thing I never managed to get my head around. No problem with all those other imperial measures - I can happily swap miles for km, pounds for kg - but Fahrenheit are above my head. :?

I can do the F word  for temperatures from about 60F up to 115F because I know what it actually feels like, i.e. outdoor weather. I never understood them in low temps though and always think in Centigrade for cold, and I think that started when I moved to the Netherlands and we had down to minus 15C!

However F for ovens I don't know; it was gas mark when I was a kid then Centigrade for electric ovens.

I think only the US still have F ovens. (I can't be bothered to type the word out!).

You're lucky Ina, I have to 'translate' for my Mum when we're chatting on the phone, from Euros to Pounds, F to C, kilos to pounds, inches to cm ..... gets a bit irritating sometimes.

Yeah, I know - even here at work, surrounded by all those scientists with degrees, I have to do a fair amount of "translating"... And then they get the ratios wrong - use the one for pints to litres instead of the one for pounds and kg, and so on!

We have one and a lots of time it's trail and error (but then we also think the thermostat is out which accounts for a lot of it.

Oh, and we still have some symbols we arn't sure of thier function, and when we ordered a replacemnt manual the handy explination was skewed off the photo copy!
I'm increasingly of the belief that any shops situated on or near retails parks only serve to make people unhappy.

3M is right the "advice " given is 20 degrees C lower for fan ovens.

However the funny symbols on the oven sound a lot like mine, Annpan what make of oven is it?.

The general code is:

One straight horizontal line on the top= top oven
One straight horizontal line on the bottom=bottom oven
two straight horizontal lines top and bottom = conventional oven
two straight horzont lines and a propella = fan oven
one wavy top line = grill
one wavy top line plus propella = fan grill

The idea is you use different types of heating for different dishes.
I have measured my Smeg oven at top heat plus fan at 290 degrees C!

I do home made pizza's on a pizza stone in around 4 minutes!!!

However with a loaf it makes it rise lobsided, so its best not to use fan.

low slow heat there is no point in using fan oven (if you can turn it off) unless you want to use top and bottom selves.

hope this might help.

So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli
