all is not lost - I have spottted some tadpoles, so the gf can't have had them all. I think these are toad babies.. not frog babies as i did see some strings of eggs in the pond... no masses of frogspawn.
unless newt babies look like tadpoles too.. as we have newts too...

ack i dunno.. but all that loving was not for nothing it seems...
