It would still mean that kids would be able to read some of the posts that are more adult on this forum. There is a bit of swearing here and there. I would prefer a seperate place altogether and would have to look into the laws around it, we would need moderators around 24-7 to ensure that it stays a safe place.Sal wrote:Couldn't you set up a protected part on this forum?

Ah phpbb must be different then because on SMF forums you make a section visible to under 13's so they dont see the rest of the forum - thats why I asked :)

My blog has the option to check comments for content before I publish them online. Can we not have something that does this? That way, any addresses or things of a personal nature can be edited out *before* they get into the public domain and then there will be less risk for the kids?
I'm sure the mods here would happily set up a rota of some sort for checking post before publication, and I'm also sure that others who aren't mods would happily chip in as well.
The kids wouldnt even be able to swap email addresses without them going thru the forum modulation first, so one to one contact could be halted in its tracks. You'd have to switch off the PM option, naturally.

I might be wrong... but I imagine that children would prefer to see their posts immediately rather than waiting for a moderator to approve them. Ok, posts could be approved quickly, but sometimes they might take a while to appear...
Tricky - are there any kids forums that we know about?
I must say though... that kids could be looking at the forum even now... nothing to stop them saying that they are over 13 even if they are not... oh, and they don't need to register to view anything either.
Actually - could we do it by changing the allowed access for each child that joins so that (once logged in) they can only access one particular forum. It's possible, but would be a bit of work for the mods.

Chances are kids under 12 won't be interested in most of the discusions on this site and they technical details or political views that come up, they would have to go on a bit of a hunt for swearys, and it's funnier looking them up on wikipedia any way.
If we do a parental consent bit then use the mods to read posts for the eco-kids page before they go on the forum, it will be slower, but it's the price you pay.
I think it should just be on this site though, otherwise it is a bigger job to moderate. It also means we can all have a look at there thoughts on it.
There should be an under 16s only rule though at least to give the immpresion of kids only.

This is what I meant before, it could be possible but yes would make more work for the mods, unless you had a mod especially for the kids bit?Shirlz2005 wrote: Actually - could we do it by changing the allowed access for each child that joins so that (once logged in) they can only access one particular forum. My son has just pointed out that on one of the games he plays on there is some kind of filter that prevents anything dodgy being said. Apparently thats what Sal has been talking about. So I'm guessing that it's possible to have some kind of automated filter system like they have on some of the kids gaming sites.
I think, as well, that we as parents have a responsibility to check whats going on, so how about we have a rota of kids forum moderators and if there is one incident that causes any parental worry it is put to full moderation.
My son also came up with an idea of "trick" age sections - that is,have say 6-10, 10-14, 14-16, 16-21, then anyone filling in the last one can be directed to the full ssish section (he's a clever lad!!!)
The thing is, we seem to have a next generation who are interested in this and I think that its really important to encourage that - after all - they are the ones that will be here when we aren't and we have a lot to teach them so that they can pass it on to their children.

ok it IS possible to make a section ONLY visible to minors, so they cannot see the forum on phpbb, I just installed it and fiddled with it lol
all it means is that children have to be put manually into a sub-section membergroup by a mod :)

I think it's a wonderful idea, but the realities of the modern world, I fear, will make it almost impossible to carry out safely!
Technically there is no problem in having different "levels" of membership on a board, with whole chunks invisibly "missing" to visitors in one of the special categories, but the "policing" problem is almost insurmountable for a small forum like this - you'd need 24/7 vetting, preferably by people with experience of such things.............
Having blanched at some of the things I've seen on TV recently just after the 9pm watershed, this place is purity and innocence in comparison - I think everyone here is adult enough to answer any young person's question in a reasonable way - I think you'd have far fewer problems that way - they'd just be "another member" - if you ghettoise them, the ghetto is a honeypot for perves! I'd suggest simply disallowing private messages to or from a minor - then everything that transpires is "out in the open". - perhaps just have a "junior member" category of membership without the pm facility!

Nothing, but whats stopping unwanted people reading (or signing up for that matter) this forum already and pretending to be someone they're not?baldowrie wrote:and what stops the 'groomer' pretending to be a child? Or the adult who fakes their child details because in reality they are that 'groomer'?
I am all for safety, I have 2 kids, I want them to be safe, but it would also be a good outlet for them to have a space of their own :)

As we are, or should be, adults we are more able to cope with itNothing, but whats stopping unwanted people reading (or signing up for that matter) this forum already and pretending to be someone they're not?
We are with AOL, they have a heavy regulated kids area. They are not allowed on web site unless I have unlocked them first, and they have to send an email to me asking permission. The only email they are allowed to receive are the address I have unlocked for them and they are definitely NOT allowed in chat rooms or forums as 15 year old Sandra could well be 36 year old Fred getting his daily thrill!
As an adult if I am approached by another forum member and I find what they are saying is a little suspicious I have the years of experience to either report them to a mod or disregard their communications.
So whilst in theory children using a forum they are interested sounds great. However for me, and others, the practicalities and safety out weight this.
This my opinion and I believe I am entitled to it!

Ultimatley and sadly I think that is the case too as the website owner I would be liable if anything untoward happened, not to mention having to live with the fact.baldowrie wrote:

Not sure about the without the PM facility, I think this needs a bit of research into the law and what other sites have done before we do anything.

Along with the usual parental worries, we have, sadly, had first hand experience of just how unpleasant this world can be - not on the internet but rather outside our own front door in the space of ten minutes!!! Rather more "in-your-face" than an unidentified, faceless entity. So in my experience there is a choice to be made - do we fear everything and wrap our kids up in cotton wool or do we give them the information that we hope will be the armour to protect them, as best we can, and let them have the experience of what the world has to offer - but always guiding them to the good stuff and standing right behind them as they venture out???
On a practical level - how about we restrict it to the children of those of us who are already signed up here? Adult only recommendation. That they are the only people allowed to post apart from assigned moderators. Then for anyone else there has to be a minimum of period of an adult membership or suitable number of appropriate postings before related children are allowed on. For kids profiles only have categories restricted to nick name, county, age bracket and interests - nothing traceable or too specific.
We all want to protect our children but we don't want to smother them
