Oh yes, I know this illness....
I got vertigo last year from an inner ear infection that I didn't know I'd even got/had.
The dizzyness was like being permanately sh!t-faced; but without the happiness of drinking before hand. Everytime I moved I would throw up, and moving from sitting/standing/lying took me about 10 minutes. The room would move round and the floor would heave even when I was still.
I had to take about 4 weeks off work, and ended up having all sorts of tests done (including a CT scan). My OH was horribly worried when I got it, as he thought I had a brain tumour (cancer runs in my family).
The doctors said that labryinthitis is a bit of a catch-all, and is often caused by inner ear infections. Most of the time you don't know you've got them, and they don't cause any pain or have any symptoms except for the dizzyness etc.
I have got some lovely drugs to take when I get the attacks again (like last month) - they are called Cinnarizine (sp?)
It can also be a symptom of Meniere's Disease (which also runs in my family)

That's the ones that he was put on - they didn't help him.Masco&Bongo wrote:

Good point about being too polite Boots... !! It's wrong that we should be penalised for being polite and patient isn't it.

Thanks mate :)
I managed to talk to him on the phone last night - he's enjoying the playstations and widescreen telly etc but is bored and wants to come home. He's got a phone and telly by his bed and is in his own room which is nice... but to call him costs 14p per MINUTE which is ridiculous - and that's apparently a special promotion. I phoned the 0845 number because I kept getting through to his answering machine anyway, and they took the phone through to him.
I know that they've got to fund these fancy bedside computers/telly/phone things and they are great - but 14p a minute is extortionate I think.
Anyway - today he's going for the CT scan and the ECG. He's a bit apprehensive about the tunnel bit because he gets a bit claustrophobic.
He says that two of the doctors think it's still labyrinthitis and that two other doctors reckon it's a post viral thing.

Yes - he's out of hospital and the tests were all clear... but he's still not feeling any better so they now want to do more tests, including an MRI scan. I'm not sure when that will happen but hopefully soon.
Thanks for asking mate... and thanks everyone for their support too - it means a lot.

Missed this post, Sorry to hear about your broods tribulations, fingers crossed it all turns out OK in the end. At least he's home now, middle ear infections have bizarre and serious-sounding side effects
- OH and both of my off spring are regular sufferers (as I type OH is on TDS amoxil for a middle ear infection) Hugs and best wishes to all of you XXX
kind thoughts
