I could go into a long rant of why I hate this song but I think I've been beaten to it.  I'll just say it's not really my cup of tea.  I prefer bands like the Flaming Lips http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MHBIoGh6Og

If I was a DJ, I think I'd want to run this song back to back with "Don't Dream It (Be It)" (or whatever the exact title was) from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I like the overall sound of the song (although I don't listen to pop music radio so I'm not getting overexposed to it) and, if I heard someone performing something like it at one of the open mic nights I frequent, I would probably be impressed.
However, there's no need to hark back to idealised dreams of the past. In the real world, hippies and punks and protest movements had plenty of downsides, including the results some of them suffered for standing up for what they believed in. People can still do that today, although I suspect that being in hock to "da man" (in the form of multinational record companies) probably puts a bit of a downer on such aspirations.
