Most of the newer soapmaking books tend to focus on the "craft" side of it and start out with commercial soap which you then tart up and make it into your product. One good book that I bought recently is -
"The Handmade Soap Book" by Melinda Cross 1998, New Holland Publishers UK.
As it starts from scratch.
You might also want to have a look at some of the old chemical formularies such as Henleys Formulas for Home and Workshop"; "Formulas for profit" ; Fortune in formulas" or if you have access to a larger library - "The Chemical Formulary" edited by Bennet which is probably up to 30 or 35 volumes by now. All of them have sections on soap making and some have been reprinted into later editions.

Beat 1 egg yolk, then slowly beat in 250ml of water.
Work mixture well into scalp and hair.
rinse thoroughly.
Vinegar or lemon juice added to the final rinsing water removes all traces of shampoo and adds shine.

When in Australia, and travelling around for 9 weeks, I didn't wash my hair at all - it was GORGEOUS by the end - thicker, wavey, shiney - didn't smell... I washed my body, of course, in those showers they put at beaches for the surfers, etc... early in the morning, they were cold!!! :) happy memories!

I've been using shampoos from
Faith in Nature; they're not the world's cheapest at about three or four pounds a bottle, but I seem to be using less because they foam more easily, and apparently they are pretty green. Recommended by
Brigit Strawbridge, no less.

you could try this:
grate up a bar of soap into a 2 cups of water add 1/2 teaspoon of veg oil and two tablespoons of lemon put in an old bottle, shake and Robert is your dad`s brother!!!

We use Faith in Nature stuff too. The Aloe Vera. Its ok. My hair is dry and its still dry, but its clean :-) - its SLS free (ALS only which is better, if not great anyway)
Also use Earth Friendly Baby stuff which lasts AGES but also, not the cheapest.
