Not totally impossible.Massive watering followed by nice deep mulch,certainly wouldn't do any harm.

The only thing I like more than mulching is talking about it...so I'll be brief.Choose from: Home made compost,Well-rotted manure,leaf- mould,(my fave)spent- mushroom compost,Hop waste (but save that for any blueberries,if you grow them).

If you have none of these,old used grow bags,or any cheap ones you might find.Although you are feeding them,the primary purpose is to hold in moisture(hence the initial heavy watering) and to control weed growth.I'll shut up now.
