Bugger, bugger, bugger !!!!!!

Here I was, feeling sorry for everyone, but very snug. Switched on the computer this morning and the power promptly went off. It's only just come back on (7 pm) and I'm sick of Radio 4 and sick of the assumptions everyone makes in these situations (you know - putting the kettle on and nothing happening, finding that the torches aren't where we KNOW we left them - that kind of thing).

Ah well - it's back on now ...

We haven't even HAD any winter yet!

Now on day 5 of a sunny - wet and windy - sunny - wet and windy - sunny strange weather pattern.

Exactly, MMM - that's what was so annoying. We haven't had much evidence of winter either. We got a reasonably heavy blow when the rest of the country had storm force gales. It blew all night, and nothing happened. Then the sun came up and we had a glorious spring-like day with no wind - at which point the bloody power pole fell over and took out half of the village's electricity.

But yes - basically no sign of winter. We've had a few cold days, but not a frost in sight. Things are coming up in the garden which, by rights, should still be months away. The tobacco plant which I used as a seed provider (and then just left in its pot) has started into growth again. We still have flowers from last year. The sodding lawn needs to be mowed. The garlic's a foot high.

Where are the snows of yesteryear? (There you go - a literary reference )

Heard on local radio from an amateur weather forecaster that the worst is now over. Hope so wind at last dropped phones still out bur there's worse things could happen.

We had the second frost of the winter this morning. A very light covering of ice on the windscreen that I didn't even notice and the windscreen wipers cleared without complaint. Normally I'd have been scraping ice off every morning for at least 2 months by now.

I just hope we don't get a sudden late frost when all the fruit has started flowering.

Thankfully the wind has eased a bit this evening, plenty of drizzle though (or as they say around these parts 'torrential mist'. Mind you, I have been keeping a very good eye on a certain weather site which has proven to be very accurate over the last three years and they reckon the cold is going to dig in around the 15th Jan.

I am just grateful that we haven't had a winter like the last two (yet!). I had a good supply of turf and timber but will need to use the oil if things get colder - and that's very expensive!

Have had about 10 frosts but only minor ones and nothing below zero, so whilst the nasturtiums have finally sucumbed a lot of other things are still alive like borage, and I have the self seeded babies of annuals growing away nicely, such as pot marigolds, big fluffy poppies and corncockles which are still having the occasional flower. It's hard having to clear away such things. I also want the foliage to die down on a lot of perennials as the bulbs are coming through way too early and I haven't weeded/tidied/spread compost yet because it isn't really winter yet.....

On the other hand, it's rather pleasant and not putting the wood burner on until 5pm in January is amazing!

I've hardly used any wood this year and the heating has hardly been on. I guess it's ironic that the warmer weather will be doing its bit for global warming.
