Ditto. I do a bit of recreational canoeing and a fair bit of caving but I wouldn't want to watch either. Well, not unless it involves fit ladies in neoprene but that's just mebaldybloke wrote:The only sport that I did as a kid were canoeing and archery (not at the same time). In my defense, archery is more of a discipline than a sport. As I mentioned earlier I'm probably the worlds worst spectator (short attention span) and would rather be doing something constructive.
I flipping hate football.

I love sport - particularly football.
I think this is because i was brought up playing sport and I have always been sporty and enjoyed competitive team games.
Would it be right to say that those who hate sport didn't play sport growing up? Is it just that some people are sporty and some aren't?

Not voluntarily. I suffer fairly badly from hayfever, and it was much worse when I was a kid, so the idea of playing outside in a large field of grass held much the same appeal for me as the idea of going swimming in a vat of hydrochloric acid. Plus I got bullied a lot at school, and few situations provide opportunities for bullies like team sports. Oh, and I'm pretty sure have mild exercise-induced asthma, which I've only realised in the last few yeas... Put that all together and PE was quite literally a nightmare for me.TheGoodEarth wrote:Would it be right to say that those who hate sport didn't play sport growing up?
But there's a big difference between participating in sport, watching sport, and having your locality turned upside down by other people watching sport. And there's also a difference between team sports and solo sports, and another between what you might call direct and indirect competition... I was a pretty serious climber for a while, I was on the cusp of getting my black belt in karate before I realised I really didn't like sparring, and I can both canoe and shoot a recurve bow moderately well. I can be competitive, but I'm very much not a team player.
Cheers

The archery had to stop when my back gave out and the kit finally got sold last year. It is a great sport/discipline as it focuses the mind. All your cares and woes go out the window, as you concentrate on grouping those arrows.
I'm also not good at team sports but my main problem is with the commitment it entails. I have too many other things that are more important in my life these days and a lack of time.

Has anyone seen the plot, I seem to have lost mine?

I love Rugby Union. We used to go to Sale Sharks although I rarely knew what was going on without the moving cameras and commentary
It didn't matter though because I spent most of my time watching Chabal running up and down the field

Ah - the truth is out
Chabal, apart from being a pretty good player, is a monster. And he's French, which is not a good thing to be in rugby circles unless you, too, happen to be French.
So, GA, you like rollmops, Marmite and rugby? When is wife-swapping coming back into fashion?

I suppose some people are sporty and some are creative and some like going to the movies and some....
It's a good job we're all different, imagine how boring it would be if we all supported the same team
Anyway, I wouldn't say that I hated any particular sport but I just have too many other things to do to sit and watch it.
I didn't play much as a child, mostly for the same reasons as already mentioned, which I guess fits in with the theory that if you enjoy sport you enjoy watching it too.

Sorry to disappoint Mike - Marmite is a definite no-no!

Oh dear, I must be in a serious minority here then; I love football. I don't support a particular team and have only ever been to one match but perhaps years of living in Spain and watching the never-ending procession of games on TV in the bars there (including most British games - Spaniard know as much about the Premiership and Championship a most self-respecting British fans) probably had something to do with that.
Even worse, I like cricket too. Not bad for someone who rarely watches TV. AND I like marmite...

You have got to admit that rugby is far far better than football. If I behaved on the rugby pitch on a saturday like the vast majority of footballers do, I'd get my head kicked in....and I'd be greatfull for the others teaching me the errors of my ways.

It's never been out of fashion here if my experience is anything to go by. (Not direct experience though, sorry!).MKG wrote:When is wife-swapping coming back into fashion?
