I was a nurse before kids, there were aspects that were great and the absolutely best job in the world- like being present at a beautiful relaxed birth of a child. There were times that it really was the pits- not because of filth or hard manaul labour, but sitting with someone your own age when they're being told about the extent of inoperable cancer and being left to deal with the fallout as the Dr just leaves the room, sheesh not a day I want to repeat in a hurry.. I still think about them and their family 9 years later.
kind thoughts
Deb

I've had many jobs that are grim in different ways - working in the hospital laundry, this was actually morbidly fascinating - matching up an ailment to the aftermath on the sheets, seeing the "skin ward" sheets like turin shrouds, and seeing what blood becomes after sitting in a bucket for days unwashed. The foul linens room was the testing ground there.
Wardrobe maintainence is always a bit niffy (especially if you get dancers undies, especially prolific homosexual dancers undies...), but it was the people rather than the work I didn't like. i have a similar job now - working with children - egocentric, pooey pants, loud and demanding, just like actors!
The worst jobs in terms of one's soul were working as a temp in a loan sharks office, and insurance offices. What a bunch of shits running the scams, and you just want to tell people "Stop spending the money - you are going to be passing this debt onto your grandchildren if you carry on. You are unwaged, live in a council house and have 5 kids. You probably feel you need a holiday for 5 grand, but you really can't afford it! Nor the 8 grand car you feel you need, nor all the rest of the crap you keep spending money on..." etc.
Vile.

The worst job I had very well paid, car, pension, expense account and on the surface brilliant. However it was the pressure of the MD on everyone that made it a nightmere.
I did tech service for UK and Ireland. And did 55000 miles a year, just in the UK not including 1 week a month in Ireland. I packed my bags on Sunday and was lucky to get home Thursday. So I could do a local visit some 100 miles away on a Friday. There was a lot of entertaining and I put a lot of weight on, every Christmas I would get alcohol poisoning and my face would come out in a rash, the whole culture was so you couldn't opt out from taking customers out and drinking. Then you would come under pressure to take customers to watch football in the corporate box on Saturday (Man City some 140 miles from my house), which meant packing the bags Saturday morning and coming home Sunday before packing the bags Sunday night. I eventually got very stressed and depressed, especially when our owner had told the owner of one of the factories I was working with , that we would definitly switch them over to us....4 years later we were still trying and I was sure I was for the chop. Luckily it was my boss the technical director who got it!. But I knew I had to get out. Luckily I got this job just 7 mile from home so I can do stuff like gardening and hopefully get an allotment this year.
I used to dread going into the office on Monday morning..a 140 mile drive. My life was a miseary. My wife used to say it was just like the book The Firm, they controlled most of my waking hours, and quiet a few of the non waking!.
However it taught me a lot, like money is not everything its quality of life, and thats where the whole ssish thing started.
