Whats more scarry is the amount of packaging that gets wasted by comercial and industrail bussiness. Everything you buy from a shop thats over packaged you can bet came to the shop in even more packaging which the shop just throws away! Boycott the Supermarkets!

Been thinking about my last post about burning plastic on the rayburn, I probably burn more than I realise but still feel that 10 seconds of fumes balances out the 500 years in landfill.

Indy - I think your 500 years is probably a bit OTT for landfilled plastic.. I found an old Morrissons bag up my loft containing some stuff... the bag fell apart into flakes when i picked it up... it must have been there 15 years. Are they designed to do that? No heat, no wetness, no direct sunlight. My guess is that plastics CAN be made to last for centuries but many aren't.
Apart from paper-pulp egg-boxes what other packaging gets the thumbs up?
(now I keep my own chooks I don't even need those!)

OMG!! Don't burn plastic in your domestic woodburners etc.
Unless burned at a very high temperature (can't remember exactly but something around 1000oC), only guaranteed in industrial furnaces, you'll release dioxins. If you don't inhale them directly, they'll get into the soil and so, your food chain.
