Clean Water?

We basically run our house on rainwater. Nominally, we've got a well under our kitchen - the house is 350 years old, so it's been there quite a while, and during some recent updating on the well, we've discovered it's not really a 'proper' one but a catchpool, so it's not based on an underground spring or anything exciting like that. So far, it's not done us any harm - the water has too high a bacteria level to be drunk (although we've made cups of tea etc because it's been boiled) but baths, washing etc - fine.
