I have a horse and therefore alot of muck to dispose of so all my plots get some composted muck dug on. The onions are hotter with more compost (so I'm told) and milder with less. To be honest the crrots I've grown don't seem to care either way! I don't really suffer with forked roots (despite stoney soil too), but a few odd shapes don't bother me. Got to say there never seems to be an easy solution to muck on the ground!
