Sorting out a severely burnt pan

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

The dishwasher tablet sounds interesting. The problem is not shifting burnt on rice, but that I have carbonised the base of the pan. DH says he'll have a go with the wire brush fitting of his drill. Fortunately it's the base of a steamer so although I do quite often use it as a pan in its own right, for which it is designed and perfectly capable (or was!), I can at least continue to use it as a steamer. :oops:

yep, I'll 2nd that - I used tommy k on stainless steel pans years ago that I thought were well and truly 'knackered'. I suspect its the vinegar and sugar in them that does the hard work.

DH sorted it out with Astonish in the end, the stuff just came straight off. I'm an Astonish convert now.
