Can't imagine it can be worse than what might or might not bleed out of car tyres, and they are generally in use. I don't think I'd worry too much about that. But of course I don't have any hard evidence for that, either!

Car tyres... that's a good point. I saw some ratproof worm bins made with tyres at a local organic producer's place, and thought I might give them a go next year. That's cheered me up no end, since our house renovations will kick out some old synthetic carpets pretty soon. Thanks!

Gunners, don't forget the weed control fabric (or similar) - you'll save yourself a lot of work. (By the way depending on the size of the chippings and the worm count, chippings can disappear in as little as 18 months!) You can buy the fabric by the metre on Ebay much cheaper than you'll find it on the high street.
