I'm a fan of the bicarb and vinegar method myself. Put half a cupful of bicarb into the toilet and then pour a cupful of vinegar in after it. Leave it to soak for a few hours then pour a little bit of vinegar onto the toilet brush and scrub with that. Repeat every week and after a couple of weeks the pipes won't be making the same alarming gurgling noise (nor emitting a noxious smell up the bath plughole when the toilet is flushed - oh, did same bicarb and vinegar treatment down that as well). And then a couple of weeks later you'll realise that that disgusting brown stuff is also going away.
Spurred on by that success I am also now a big fan of using a quarter of a lemon sprinkled with bicarb to get the taps and tiles sparkly - really gets rid of all the horrible hard water build up.
