Does anybody know of any other country that has doorstep milk deliveries other than the UK ?
In all my travels I've never come across it anywhere else ... it seem to be one of those peculiar British things.

My ex-MIL used to tell me stories of when they lived in Barcelona and the milkman delivered there, but also delivered wine and champagne. Perhaps that's what's needed to get the milkman back in this country.

I've got a similar problem - I've got loads of the things. Just discussed with OH and we're going to have a go at John's vertical gardening - make a frame and grow strawberries or something.

We'll see how they survive the winds!

I have used them previously for scoops, funnels and bird feeders, but a new use that I have found is to cut the tops off 2 of them so you are left with 2 bases and they can then fit over each other-creating a storage box, ideal for storing seeds and other garden items.

Makes a goos base for the head of a child - sized pantomime horse .......if you should ever need one

Fill with water and use as training weights.

Fill with water turn upside down and plant in your huge pots to water in the summer. I admit lemonade bottles are better.

Cut in half and use when your cleaning out the car oil.

Put in cold used oil to take down the recycling dump.

Give to the dog, mine loves to chew plastic, as a play toy (remove the lid first).

Fill with stones and use as a door stop, you could always cover them in something cute.



Going to have to think of the rest.

I use them (and any other old bottles) to brew my comfrey tea for the plants. I also use them as travel dog biscuit containers for if we take the dogs on a day out, ditto for filling with water for the doggies for after a long walk.

Cutting carefully you can make a basket for eggs or fruit - I'm sure I posted this before along with pix. Will have a look.

I use 2-liter pop bottles to make mini earth boxes for seedlings and small plants, you could probably do the same with milk bottles. Cut a slit or hole in the lid, and near the top (but not in the lid) make a hole big enough for a drinking straw (I use those a lot too). Then cut the top off right where it starts to narrow. Invert the top, poke the straw through its hole, and put the top in the bottom. Fill the first few inches with something spongy, I'm still using a giant bag of peat moss my parents bought years ago, but anything that will absorb water without dissolving will work, even a piece of used-up kitchen sponge! Then just fill the rest with dirt and plant it.

There are 2 ways to water such a pot. You can either stick a small funnel into the straw and water through the straw, or you can pour water right on the dirt, and the straw will let the air escape. Don't try this without the straw, the water forms a seal as it tries to trickle down, as a result the air can't escape to make room for the water, and the water can't get down because the air is in the way.

Cut off the bottom to make a soap dish or use to keep sponge in by the kitchen sink

Cut them in half (ish)...use the top bit (with the top on) as a plant pot, and the bottom as a holder/water catcher (fit one inside the other)....fab for herbs on the kitchen windowsill...or cut and come again lettuce etc

I use cut up plastic milk bottles as plant labels but after a few weeks the permanent marker has washed off. Does anyone have any idea how to overcome this?

Yes, Thomzo on here used a needle to etch or pinprick the writing onto the plastic, it seemed to work, but I haven't found the need myself. HTH
