Using it is exactly as you describe using a sharp spade, with one BIG exception ... with a mattock you are standing upright, a very important point to us oldies with not so flexible back muscles.
Also it's the right tool for the job ... you could hoe a garden using the spade as you describe, but a hoe is so much better
