I'm making one - not at the moment of course, not worth it in the middle of winter - but I have a box painted black, with holes cut in the top and bottom covered with insect screen, shelves from an oven which I'm going to cover with insect screen, and a piece of perspex for the front. It'll sit in the conservatory which gets full sun. Cheap and very low energy, made from free bits of stuff.

Last autumn we lived in a house with a small apple orchard (just for the for one harvest season). My Stöckli has been running overtime during those weeks and I had a whole lot (!) of dried apples. I learned how to use them and it was certainly cheaper to dehydrate the apples ourselves than purchase dehydrated apples from the stores. However, it is still quite a bit of energy use... I forgot exactly what our electricity measurements turned up, unfortunately.

Yes the Stockli is excellent, very quiet. I recommend the metal trays, and buy a few extras at the same time
