Re: How do you ration your internet usage?
he he he, certainly works. I very rarely am without an internet connection due to computer malfunction, there are too many of the beasts. But if the internet connection to the entire home goes down... holy cold turkey bat man. I am clucking like a chicken about to lay an egg. I have the monkey on my shoulder directing me round the house, testing all known LAN connection, routers and broadband modems, resetting everything, untill I fianlly beleive that the light which should be on and which is off, and indicates the broadband is not working, is telling the truth. Then I go and sulk in a corner.jampot wrote:lol my computer is forever throwing hissy- fits and wont work. is that a good way![]()
If you are using a PC windows, and your machine throws hissy fits, may I recommend system mechanic from iolo, brilliant tool kit, completely user freindly, no specialist knowledge required. I have been using it for years. It does what it says on the tin! (fully functioning 30 days trial with no strings attached can be found here home page and here for the free trial download page, the licence should you buy it covers three machines (and no I don't have shares in the company nor commission.

If only Bill Gates had designed it that way! Nice thing about system mechanic is that it kind of teaches you how it all works as you use it. I was an inveterate mac user for 14 years, I can now maintain windows in three languages (and probably another three), System mechanic levels the playing field but it won't install Service pack 3 for windows XP for example (if you have a problem do it in safe mode) or set up your network, that kind of stuff is still in the hands of the user.StripyPixieSocks wrote:... or learn to fix the things yourself ;)
I would not wish learning everything about windows on my worst enemy, having been there, I am my worst enemy!
Re: How do you ration your internet usage?
Having a Macbook, I have to ration myself the old-fashioned way, by putting it to sleep or shutting it down. My brother, who knows me, and computers, said to me, "You are an Apple person. Never consider anything else. Save you pennies and buy an Apple." I bought a Powerbook 145B many years ago. Wonderful contraption. Now have a Macbook Pro, and am still learning how to use the thing. When I hear about all the things one must do to a PC and watch out for, I know my brother was right about me. I opt for having no Bill Gates products. So far, am getting along.
Have watched the clock on my internet time since asking, and am thinking of using a timer. I use it for naps, why not for internetting?

Re: How do you ration your internet usage?
I'm another isher who uses their pooter for work - so I am on my PC about 10 hours a day - not in one sitting granted. I'm lucky to be able to work from home and choose the hours I spend working - lately it's been very very early in the morning.
When I'm not working on the PC I like to chill out on the ish site and a few others that I own and moderate. So my computer is my work AND my hobby.
I completely LOVE the internet - all that wealth of information at my fingertips - and there's no way I'm gonna ration my internet usage.

Re: How do you ration your internet usage?
I envy you, I had to get a PC to go with my macs when I left the Britain, as I need a PC for testing web applications, sites etc. Previously I'd just pop to a freind's house and use their windows machine. No guarentee of being able to do that in a foreign country. I also opt for as few Bill Gates' products as possible, just windows and internet explorer, everything else is independent.LBR wrote:Having a Macbook, I have to ration myself the old-fashioned way, by putting it to sleep or shutting it down. Other days I only check my email or look up something I need.
Today was a heavy day on the 'net for me, but I've got too much on my mind for clear thinking except for answering email and checking forums for topics I can put my 2 cents worth into.
Tea and mrs. flibble know whats on my mind and their input via private message has been helpful and supportive, thank you both!
Definitely don't get on the puter when you're trying to start cooking, the spuds boiled dry on me and a few other things too!

This is why God invented timers. I time my tea, why not lots of other things? So, now my internet time for this part of the day is over. See you all later.
