Re: Town, city, village or what its only me and the cat
Live in the woods, a hundred yards from a small hamlet, after a lifetime sentence in London.

I can't do great things, so I do little things with love.
Re: Town, city, village or what its only me and the cat
Grew up in Glasgow now live in a small village/ the country... The village is actually a big hamlet, I guess, there are no amenities, except a post box and a phone box (no coins accepted)
I am strangely much happier here, the city was in my blood and socialising is much harder work out in the sticks but I feel much more contented here, and IMO a much more suitable way to raise a child.
Certain options were limited for us in the city, if we could have afforded to live in a nicer area, we would have. I used to be scared of noises in the street at night, keep my head down if I was out after dark and never open the door at night... life is so much more civilised when everyone knows everyone.

Ditto - ten houses, and most of my neighbours are a Bit Odd. Jolly nice, mind you, but odd.Millymollymandy wrote:I live in a hamlet but you don't have any options for hamlet or 'in the middle of nowhere'!
Lets see...
Chantalle who lives with a selection of rabid Yorkies who are continually trying to kill her. She's permanently covered in bite marks, but still loves her dogs;
Jacques who is a retired farm contractor who regards the Earth as his enemy and sprays everything in sight with Agent Orange. He's also president of the commune's hunting association (camoflage & firearms, not dogs & horses) which means we don't go short of game because he thinks our girls are "wonderful" and much more polite than his own grandchildren

Maire-Catlin and her family who came from Guadaloupe and wear the same slightly baffled expressions common to all those who pitch up in the South Vendée by accident. Cooks ferociously spicey food and occaisionally throws wild parties involving loads of Carribian music and punches made out of far too much rum and a very small amount of pineapple juice.
Oddette who got arrested by the gendarmerie for going mad one day on discovering a rat in her kitchen and trying to shoot it. Ever seen "Ratatouille?" Just like that only we all had our windows peppered with No6 shot. They let her go when no-one wanted to press any charges for damage.
We're about 1.5km from the village proper. I really like it here.

Now a large-ish village six miles from a town
but born and brought up in an urb (known as 'village' by the inhabitants) five miles from a city centre in the industrial north
shame most of britain's villages/hamlets have been bought out by the 'place in the country' brigade and have died as living places

Re: Town, city, village or what its only me and the cat
So, it's Me... the Cat.... 3 basset hounds.... a cavalier spaniel.... oh, and a hubby!
Originally, I'm from london - elephant & castle... moved to kent...... then up to blackpool & over to ireland last year.
At the minute, we are surrounded by fields just over a mile away from the local village (which means a garage/spar & a pub)
Once we move in a couple of weeks, we'll be next to a small forest & more fields - 3 miles away from the village - again a local garage/spar, pub but we'll have a wood yard too!
After growing up as a complete townie, I'm MORE than happy being a country hermit - long may it last!

When we moved here (to Derby) it was the edge of the town. We had Town on one side of us and fields on the other. Now the town has oozed round us and now fills the horizon on all sides.

We are stardust, we are golden, and we`ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Re: Town, city, village or what its only me and the cat
Currently living in, what used to be, the outskirts of a town that has tried several times to become a city. Hopefully it has given up that lost cause now.
Me and the cat (one of two) have moved house so many times. We've tried city centre and we've tried rural village. Personally I like edge of town for combination of convenience (walk to local shops) and the larger houses and gardens. Just a shame they've built a whole new forest of houses now between me and the countryside.
Never tried moving house with chickens. There's always a first time.
Cheers

I live in a hamlet too. Can't really call it a village, more of a t-junction with houses on it. Still, it's definitely civilised. No church (two former Methodist chapels which are both now houses - you'd have thought they'd have got the hint first time), no shop, no bus (other than the local minibus that you have to register for), no post office. But we do have 2 pubs!

Live in a godforsaken town, half way between Nottingham and Derby, No-one seems to be able to make a decision which county it is in, so Notts address, post code and phone number and under Derbyshire county council *tut* and if you leave by the side door it's Leics.
Having said that close to some lovely countryside and greenery,

Hi
I live in a rural Lincolnshire village. 1 cat, 1 horse, 2 labradors, 8 chickens, 1 husband and a baby! I have always lived here, however love to travel and have been to some brilliant places in the UK, but for me there's no place like home and I wouldnt wish to live anywhere else.
