Sorry Rod, Brittany is north west France! 
I had redcurrants when I lived close to Geneva (v. cold winters, hot summers) and it thrived in full sun. But I didn't have blackcurrants then! Perhaps partial shade is best for blackcurrants if the summers are hot.
