Down in the cellar
... my onions from last year are starting to grow and are no longer usable for cooking. As I understand it, onions from seed grow into onions the first year and then seed the second. My onions were grown from sets. If I replant them will they go to seed for me to plant out next year instead of buying sets? w.

Onion flowers are brilliant at attracting hoverflies to your plot too, and as hoverfly larvae are voracious eaters of greenfly it can't do any harm, even if the resultant seed doesn't produce wonderful onions. Personally I always leave half a dozen leeks to flower just for their beneficial insect attracting potential.
