This was emailed to me as a daily 'eco tip' from Friends of the Earth and I hadn't thought of it before so thought I'd share it. They suggest using corks in the bottom of plantpots instead of crocks; they encourage drainage and have the added benefit of making the pot ligher (useful if it's on a balcony, I suppose).
I've been feeding all mine to the dalek so far, but I'm going to try this from now on. (Any excuse to crack open a bottle, me...)
