Eating slugs

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Eating slugs

Post: # 8444Post Andy Hamilton »

One of the strangest conversations that started up on the selfsufficientish meet was one about eating slugs. We kind of agreed that if you could eat snails then why not slugs. That is if you know all they have eaten is your plants and nothing more poisionus. Anyone tried it or have seen any old recipes?

Just a thought all be it a pretty vile one.

You sure had an interesting conversation! Well, aren't slugs just snails without the shells? Couldn't you just stuff them in a snail shell and cook them? That's if it appeals - it most certainly doesn't to me - no matter how much garlic you add! :pale:

I must admit the thought of eating slugs is pretty revolting, but I guess if you add garlic to pretty much anything savoury, it'll be tasty!

If anyone comes up with a recipe that won't poison us, I have plenty of slug stock in the garden. (who doesn't?)

I can't say I find the thought of garlic any more appealing than slugs.

Oh, not a garlic lover Stew? Not even a little topped on a parsnip? I guess it's not for everyone.

Andy...

Just how do you get rid of slug mucus I wonder?!

Squirrel doesn't tempt me, even if you cook it in wine.

I do like a road kill pheasant tho'. Had plenty of those tasty dishes.

If they tasted any good, it could be great. Why waste time fighting slugs when you can farm them instead?

However, I've got to admit that I'm still in the "it doesn't appeal to me" camp :pale:

Perhaps they just haven't been marketed properly Wulf.

That 'baby' would make slug steaks, I am sure it would have fed a family.

I've had snails and actually do quite like them.

My little boy ate a slug once,,, you know those tiny tiny tiny midget ones that you see.... well his high chair was in the garden and I was getting his breakfast and he decided he couldn't wait and picked up this baby slug (that I hadn't seen) and put it in his mouth... promptly spat it out, but then picked it up and put it back in again. He wasn't actually too keen to give it up to me when I tried to take it off him.

I've stepped on a slug in barefeet... that was enough to put me off eating them I'm sure 8)
