Homemade hair dyes

I was wondering if it is possible to make hair dyes yourself, and if anyone has tried it?

Rosemary is said to be good for darkening hair.

I used to Henna my hair but it's a messy business and the last time I did it my grey bits turned out a rather fetching shade of orange

And camomile lightens it - provided you have blond-ish hair already.

I use Henna, too (when I get round to it - haven't even had a haircut for a few months now!). Just don't use the red Henna! The stuff I use is "golden blond", which doesn't actually leave me looking like a blond bimbo, but makes the hair a little less grey!

I use henna and it either turns out dark or golden brown and never red which is cool by me. The grey bit come out slightly lighter so it doesn't look like I've just got a block of dyed hair which is another plus. My hair and scalp are also in better nick since I swapped the chemical stuff for henna. Definitely recommend it.

That's what I like about it, too - I don't look too different, just a little bit... And it definitely makes the hair stronger, too (mine is quite thin).

Oh yeah - in red, of course! Some bright orange streaks would suit you really well.

Henna for red
Indigo for blue/black

Coffee rinses for dark brown/reddish
Tea rinses for brown

Lemon juice for lightening

There are loads more...

Tumeric for yellow/reddish tints

Umm....

Have a look at www.longhaircommunity.com. I'm sure there are a load of natural hair dye ideas there. I know that there is a site somewhere with different brews of henna on it, for different colours, but i can't remember where it is.

ummmm - WHY?

Perhaps it's me, but I've never thought that women are improved one jot by dying their hair - quite the opposite in fact! I know it may be "trendy" but I really do think visible roots on a bottle blonde look dreadful (as does "bottle blond anyway) - please, celebrate the colour you're blessed with (even good old fashioned "mouse" has a lot to recommend it!)

A bit like plastic boobythings, false hair colour "looks all wrong" - skin, eye and hair colour tend to be complementary - alter the hair colour, it spoils the symmetry...........
For me, clean, healthy hair is a damn sight more attractive than dyed and "hairdressered" hair anytime (howsabout doing away with hair dressers altogether, as eco-disasters,) just leaving a few hair cutters!

And while I'm up here on my soapbox, why is it that ladies seem to want the opposite of what they were blessed with........I've had girlfriends who's hair goes like a water spaniel naturally spending hours ironing it, and some with defiantly straight hair who've spent hours trying to achieve the water spaniel look with the aid of gallons of toxic chemicals, rollers etc.......

That'll be me up for being lynched!

I use Henna in my hair because
1. It is good for your hair and seems to avoid the need for conditioner
2. It hides the grey...I don't like having grey hair (pre 30)

It is refreshing to here a man say that women shouldn't alter their bodies - I have long been of the suspicion that they do it for other women - just as there are women on the covers of women's magazines
