erm, no, not seen that method of making rugs before (but interesting). The type we were making were the sort using hooks. I knew them from my grandmother has hooky, clippy and proggy mats. Proggy mats are where you pull loops through with a hook, clippy mats are short pieces of material giving a shaggy appearance, and hooky ones are for very thin pieces of material (or wool) where you knot them to hessian.
I have also instructions for making plaited rag rugs (though that was not what we were making)

Recycling figures questionable.

Q. Re question 518; bottle tops & recycling. Envirocomms charged ****£160,000 for leaflets and brochures delivered to us the ratepayers. In question 518 and I quote, "We believe that the campaign has been very successful so far" 04/01/2008. Can we assume within a five week period you have changed your minds? Your letter also states that "communication has been highly effective", also does the 35% recycling rate still apply. Might I also ask on the question of power consumption, are you pro-active in reducing the Town Hall carbon footprint. (12/02/2008)

A. The issue about bottle tops is only one small element of the overall scheme and the publicity campaign is still considered a success principally because we are achieving a 35% recycling rate. Yes, we are trying to reduce the energy consumption in all our buildings. (12/02/2008)

EnviroComms as above stated in a very expensive campaign to introduce responsable recycling and reducing rubbish to landfill. Within the brochure supplied to every householder thay clearly stated that bottle tops should be included, this is now not the case as the recyclers consider tops to be a contaminant. The council, with the help and advice from EnviroComms state that recycling has reached the dizzy heights of 35%, this in my opinion is complete fiction as do other people within the borough.

The above questions and answers is a platform on the council website "Ask The Leader". PS they are selective in the questions they answer.

OK. I was attempting to get across several points taken from a Q & A system that the local council use: Ask The Leader, one can ask questions but answers not always guaranteed.

1. Plastic tops are presumably a different type of material to the bottle.
2. The council some months after launching a very expensive PR campaign now state that tops should now be removed, as they will be seen as a contaminant in the recycling chain, if a contaminant is found the entire load will go to landfill.
3. The main launch of this campaign cost us: £160.000. With ongoing costs as they, the PR Company, advise the council on political green issues.
4. This very slick, very expensive PR Company, do not appear to fully aware of recycling issues to have advised the council so poorly.
5. The company involved advise councils countrywide.
6. This site is probably monitored by the dark political underworld, perhaps it might be advisable to bury my head, concentrate on digging the garden instead

Justskint - you need to start a new topic. You posted yours as reply to the rag rugs thread - which is why it didn't make any sense!

But the points you make are very interesting... I'm sure there is a lot of "waste" going on in this way. I'm not keen on PR companies anyway; I usually think somebody with common sense could come up with something better.

Don't worry - you just clicked on the wrong button. The "post reply" and "new topic" are too close together!
