Garlic

Post: # 77783Post mrsflibble »

I wish to grow some, but don't know how to do it or if i even can at this late stage of the year. my garden is very protected but gets little sun after about mid morning so...
do I
1. plant in a window box to keep inside until after the last frost and then harden off gently
2. plant up against my shad where it's protected on 2 sides
3. plant in a planter which is kept against the house, would get a little more sun and is also protected on 2 sides or
4. give up.
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very

I would plant them outside now - in fact, I haven't planted mine yet, either. Maybe in a sheltered position, if you get hard frosts.

November is the standard time, outside.

However, last year I missed that timing, and planted some in March, which it said you could do on the packet (solent wight) and they worked and i have a platt (sp?)hanging up. I'm doing some I planted a week or so ago and some in march this season, to see which is best.

so you have time yet.

straight out side, or in small pots , to be planted out in april, they are fine planting out now though, but look out for mice, they can be a bit of a problem occasionally

Just make sure you chain them down...or they might run away and take the tub with them...

Gidday

Garlic can grow their roots so fast sometimes they will jump out of the ground.

I'm not kidding either, they can push themselve right up out of the ground but the roots will not be firm enough to hold them so they topple over.

I plant mine on ANZAC day, 25th. April, but the old idea was plant on the shortest day and harvest on the longest but I don't reckon they are ripe enogh then.
Cheers

thanks everyone, I've planted 9 cloves by my shed and will be doing another few in a planter by the house. I'll keep you posted.

Jack: my gran used to tie hers to canes.

Fee: did you ever find yours or are they still off hunting vampires somewhere?!
