Old fruit!

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Old fruit!

Post: # 72921Post Merry »

I`ve found some packs of fruit lurking at the bottom of my freezer!
(I know - what a rotten housekeeper I am! )
There are raspberries, redcurrants and blackcurrants - all dated 2004!
(I can feel your contempt and disapproval as I speak! )
Thing is - I`m going to make them into jam - do you reckon it`ll be all right? They look all right - just frozen!.

I think you'd smell if it wasn't OK as soon as they defrost!

I think you will be able to tell if they are OK or not, as a lot of things dessicate in the freezer if they have been in for too long. Why not take out one pack of each fruit and defrost them, and if they look/smell/seem OK then go ahead and make the jam!

Hi
I would think they would be fine, as long as you haven't had any problems with the freezer defrosting. They might have dried out or lost their texture but should be fine for jam.

The ones that have defrosted look fine - and smell fine - so I`ll have a big old jamming tomorrow! Thanks folks!
