You will be margo!

Post: # 48153Post Andy Hamilton »

Since the first days of this forum back in 2004 we have had 'The good life' avatars next to members posts. The more you post the higher up the good life ranking you go, this is a breakdown of the rankings.

margo - newbie 0 - 24
Jerry - Bit higher than newbie 25-49
Tom Good 50-99
Barbara Good 100-199
Living the good life (all 4 of them) 200-500

A selfsufficientish Regular 500 + Your own choice of avatar

This can cause confusion as at time everyone looks like they have the same avatar, so we encourage you to upload your own to use alongside this avatar or pick one from our selection.

There has been much discussion about getting rid of them all together. The truth is that I like them so they are staying, although if there ends up being a mass revolt about them then I will listen to reason.

How about making the Good Life pictures a bit smaller, so they look more like forum-related "chrome" rather than an avatar someone has chosen for themselves? I could do a couple of examples if you would like.

hmm, interesting idea a couple of examples would be good.

I'd just like to point out that I'm revolting.

Rolls eyes at Muddy

How about putting the individual's avatar at the top rather than the good life one at the top - and if it's smaller too, like Wulf suggested, then it will be less confusing.

The Good Life avatars are very small already - don't think you can make them smaller! You can have an avatar about 4 times bigger. Look at the size of Andy's! (so to speak  )

The first draft idea is here:

Image

It might be nice with a bit of extra "slickness" (eg. curved corners or a drop shadow) and would probably help starting off with a bigger original image and then working on sharpening it enough so that it looks good when made tiny.

However, it is small enough to not be too obtrusive and, with the 'ish logo is clearly part of the site rather than a personal avatar of the person it is attached to.

Worth pursuing?

Looks good, Wulf. Like Muddy, I'd rather not have the Good Life images at all, but I do see a benefit to having them; it encourages people to post so that they don't stay as Margo! So, if they must stay, Wulf's idea ought to be pursued.

I second the comment about rounded edges.

That's very good Wulf. Reckon that could be a good approach.

Can these little avatars be tooltipped (mouse-over) to a short description of who Margo etc. is, and what she represents in terms of posts, eg. "Margo Ledbetter - a complete newbie to selfsufficiency. 25 posts or less". Maybe linked (click) to a fuller description, too.

That would work. At the moment, there is a "tooltip" with the name of the character, which I am sure could be made a little bit more descriptive.
