there's two more natural remedies i've heard of working...
olive oil (the cheapest type is said to work best) or mayonaise.
(Not vasline or petroleum jelly, as it is flammable!)
the idea is to sufficate them as lice breathe though their sides.
you could probably google it.
at very least using conditioner while combing them out helps.
people also say good things about tea tree oil.

My mum was a teacher in a rather grotty school in the '50s - every friday lunch time the kids went to Nitty Nora for delousing and by story time they all had a purple crust of nits and lotion forming on their heads!!! Yuck!!!
I've found the teatree/conditioner combination to work well and I've also discovered a shampoo called Chinese Whispers that seems to be effective.
Having said all that - every time I wormed and deloused the cats I did the same with the kids!!
