You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

a Morphy Richards Breadmaker.
This really is unchartered territory.
It's in the kitchen making wholemeal bread (noisily).
Any tips? And do I always have to use breadmachine yeast?

but seriously........aged parents have got one - they do it exactly as per the destructions, and it works fine - you just have to get used to cubic loaves, with a hole in! (strangely psychologically disturbing - a bit like finding square eggs!) - but it tastes fine!

But you can get even better results by experimenting a bit. We make eight loaves of wholemeal bread a week in our breadmaker, using my own recipe, and they're almost as good as the totally handmade loaves I make.

The big advantage of the breadmaker is that I can pop the ingredients in at 10pm, set the timer and get a loaf out at 5.30am when I get up.

I still prefer a handmade loaf with my special jar of leaven (now several years old!) but I haven't the time to make one every day.

Hi Stoney

Can you please share the recipe :) We've got the same breadmaker. Results are generally ok using the recipes in the book - had a nice 5 seeded one yesterday.

Also.... I'm going to be ordering some flour and other things in bulk - 25kg at a time... if you are interested in sharing then let me know. Same goes for anyone in Aberdeenshire.

Cool... congrats Chili....

When I first got my breadmaker I put on loads of weight! Had to try different recipes and ate far more bread than normal.

I do prefer 'proper' homemade bread though!

Yeah, we use ours a fair bit. The main problem is that freshly-made bread doesn't keep all that well and is really only nice that day. Any tips for keeping it longer?

ours was never thjat good, it took up valuable kenwood chef space in our tiny kitchen so we got rid of it.

now the OH does it all by hand.

If it's not a guarded family secret I'd love a copy of the recipe as well

Polythene bag (hushhhh!). You can reuse the same bag, though.

My home made (by hand) bread lasts for days. Sometimes I'm throwing out a crust for the birds after 5 days and it is still good!

Yes you have to put it in a plastic bag to keep it fresh.

*grumbles* OK, I'll sacrifice a big freezer bag for the next one.
