Tallest sunflower competition

Just wondering if anyone is still waiting for their sunflowers to..well flower and if anyone is still reading this thread.

My tallest is now 10ft 4" and none of them have flowers yet I was hoping they'd be flowered by my daughters birthday, but that's on thursday 31st, not looking good for that.

Mine have Flowered and died and I didn't have a camera for the whole time ( still don't )

But they aren't gonna win any comps - they were the same height as me 5ft 6.

Likewise! Mind you, note how the bottom of the plants are obscured by the bench. That way you can't see they're standing on a box!

Bloody hell man, you could at least have smiled in that photo! Methinks your soil is high in nitrogen and low in phosphorus. A bit of tomato feed would probably help them flower.

Damn, I've been rumbled.

Firstly when they flower, i will definitely SMILE

and thirdly, funny you should mention tomato feed, because we have tomato plants in the same run, but they're not doing to well. They have had feed, but maybe the sunflowers stole it all.

Also is there an easy way to test soil composition

Well you can buy tests and meters from this lot, but it sounds like phosphate shortage to me. You might want to up the frequency of feed to twice a week and put a little wood ash on the bed once it's cleared provided the soil isn't already very acid.

My one hasn't flowered either although it's looking good. Maybe about 5ft now so obviously not going to win.

So, you think I should stick in som tomato feed?

Yours could be in the running for the tallest one in Scotland - mine are midgets.

Mine's not going to in either...but it is 6'2".

There are another 6 growing, but they're staying tiny dammit!

Okay, firstly let me appologise for not being on for a while. Had a little PC trouble (and i'm a bit of tech head), hopefully sorted now.

Well what can i say, my sunflowers have bloomed and are now starting to wilt, took a few pics and posted them on my site. The tallest is the one on the far left of the photos and is a huge 11ft 9" at it's tallest point and that also has the biggest head of about 25cm (just under). The flower with the three heads had bar far the prettiest flowers.
