Daffodils

Our first daffodils started blooming yesterday on a dark dismal day, so cheered me up.
There is a large range of dates when the first ones flower, although I've only been noting dates down in my garden diaries recently. But by far the earliest was the year we moved in (1994) when the first one was out on December 30th.
Of the dates I did note, the latest was 2014 when it took until February 16th and February 14th in 2011, but the average is around the January 20th.
I'll take a photo when it stops raining (not forecast until Friday)

Jealous! A little flash of yellow would cheer me up no end this year. Ours are still about 4inch high shoots.

Haven't noticed many snowdrops this year either...I guess I need to get out and about a bit more.

These are the bog standard ordinary daffs.
There used to be quite a business down here growing with daffodils, like Cornwall and the Scilly Isles, but they never really did it seriously. We are still surrounded by daffodil fields though and some farmers do still pick them for the local shops.
It's the same with early potatoes, on a par with the Channel Islands, but that all folded about 20 years ago too.

Daffs are hard to grow for me, when they really want to take off we are still too warm and dry - the Jonnies do OK though

It always seems to happen, as soon as the first daffodils start blooming we get storm force winds. This year was no exception, we have just had 48 hours of force 10 wind, purposely to flatten my daffs.

I was wondering that too, had visions of them flapping in the wind

Force 10! - I can't even think of what that would do to my place if it blew for 48 hours, winds above 50km are rare for us
I doubt of there would be many trees left standing - on the bright side (for you) I will be enjoying 43C today with nothing below 34C daytime or 17C nightime for the next week

Well that would quite possibly kill me.
I've never been able to handle extremes of temperature which is one reason for moving here. Our average winter temperatures are around 10c and summer around 20c.
Wind is annoying but bearable and as it is nothing out of the ordinary it does very little damage until it reaches 100 mph
