Strawbaling
I've just spent a long weekend building with straw bales. I've been interested in strawbale building for a couple of years now, but this is the first time I've actually done any. In this particular case, a musician is building a recording studio in his garden, and straw bales are an ideal material to do it with. He's keeping a bit of a journal about it here: http://www.pindropclub.co.uk/strawdio/journal.htm
One day I'd love to build my own home with this stuff.
Unfortunately my crappy digital camera (what a waste of money that was) packed up completely during the weekend, so I can't post any pictures.
If anyone wants to find out more about building with stawbales, you could start by having a look at these:

Bummer Stew!
Yeah, I'm intersted in strawbale building too, just never had the opportunity........I considered it for the chook shed, then wound up building the chook tractor.

No, it wasn't a course as such, just someone doing some building who wanted some volunteers and was prepared to show us what to do. But he had done a couple of courses himself with Amazon Nails and spoke very highly of Barbara Jones.
Is your course the one for the Ecology Building Society? I tried to get on that one, but it was sold out. But I am doing a course in a few weeks run by LILI ( http://www.lowimpact.org/ ) with Chug Tugby (another SB guru). I suppose I'm doing it backwards, really - volunteering first, and then doing a course to find out how I should have done it.
SBing seems to be quite a 'happy' way to build, enhanced by a mix of interesting and happy people, so take a positive mood with you, and you'll have fun.

I have had a yen to build a straw bale house since I read an article about this one: http://www.thestrawhouse.co.uk/photos.htm
Apparently it was on TV, but I never saw that. The finished house looks really lovely. My better half is unfortunatlely unenthused by the idea, so looks as if I will have to dream on...
