Ok, 3rd year of hops.
Not looking good.
On one clump I have what look like from the pictures the start of the hop flower, but they are browning off and dying
On another clump I have "sprays" of tiny flowers which seem to appear and then brown off and tie at the tip.
Any ideas?

Did you grow them from seed ?
The one with "sprays of tiny flowers" sounds like the male hop and from seed I suppose you ought to expect 50% male to female.
Males flower (in Kent) at the end of July and flower for about 3 weeks before dying off.
Female plants should be ready for picking now and stay ready for only about 2 weeks and then go brown and shed their petals.
Other than that, young plants have small hops and 3 years from seed is fairly young for a hop plant.

Yes all from seed. Only moved the Male one this year it was massive !

Don't really know anything about hops, but we have got some self sown ones that are in full flower now. So if we pick them now, what should we do with them?

Sorry Graham, I spent the first 30 years of my life fairly exclusively in the hop industry, but what you do with them after they are picked is something I have never really delved into.
Other than to say .. brew some beer, I should ask the home brewers on here for advice.

More info here...but you can pretty much cut the equipment down (after boiling) to 1 fermenting bin 1 racking vessel and....a pint pot!

Thanks Daz101, this should spur me on to a new venture, although this winter I was contemplating making some beer, I thought I'd start with a kit. Somehow I sense it's not going to be easy getting my head around all the complexities of how to treat the hops, sorting out what type they are and how and when to use them. Perhaps I should stuff them in a pillow and sleep on it.
