Got my tiny little woodburner going at the moment. It's lovely even if it doesn't give out quite as much heat as the average family kitty. Still, with three of them and the woodburner, the sitting room gets quite toasty.

I so agree about the wood stoves - was just thinking the same thing yesterday. When we have our central heating on it's all the same temp everywhere downstairs (underfloor heating) so there's nothing welcoming about our living room - whereas right now I love going in there as it's the warmest room and when I'm cold I can just stand in front of the stove and warm up my bum!

Just had a flash back when I read your post. My gran standing infront of her open fire, warming her bum.
I must have been around 3 or 4 years old at the time. Happy memories

my nan did the exact same thing, but did yours have down to the knee pink silk directoire knickers! apparently the silk heated up beautifully I had completely forgotten about that until I read your post

My nan was a "girdle, knicker and stays" lady, but I remember her legs getting so warm they resembled cornedbeef!

Oooh we haven't had one yet but reading these posts makes me want to go and light mine! We took it apart to sweep the chimney (remember to use stove pipe with a sweeping hatch when you construct yours, folks!) and it is currently in bits. Must get some fire cement and put it back together this weekend. Oh, and chop up the huge big logs which have been seasoning in the logstore. Forgot that bit.

I held off this long before lighting the woodstove this season.
Yep this morning was the first morning to fire up the stove.
we have had quite the warm spell this October. 80's til just a few days ago.
I may just start believing in the global warming

Soon it will be christmas time.

Had our's alight a few evenings now, mainly because its in the sun lounge which has a glass roof ..........At least we're burning free wood at the moment

We've cleaned the flues and have 20 cubic metres of wood stacked in the dry store by the back door, but we're still getting daytime temperatures of 22°C (fourpence, three farthings, in the old money) so, aside from from a couple of test burns, I can't see us really getting started on the wood pile until November.

I had to give in with the fire my OH was threatening to use the Tumble Drier!

I would rather burn a few logs to dry the clothes than use that.

When the kids say they are cold, they put another jumper on.

After October half term, that's when the fire should get lit!

Getting our stove plumbed in next week!! Its a boiler stove and will do our heating and hot water...no more oil bills, can't wait.

had a crap summer this year , the few days I was home I had the Stanley going , every month a few days.
since last week the temperature dropped , even had a few white mornings , so now they're both burning ,
back to cooking on the Esse , and when the door's opened to fill it the smoke smells great , burning beach wood
at the moment ,

It never did me any harm when I were a lad... born in '61 it was '84 before we even had an inside bog and proper toilet rolls !!

Centrall heating came then also and I had more colds that hot dinners [ we couldn't afford to light the oven we was so poor] then I got married and moved out into a house with no inside bog or central heating... It were grand when I were a lad.....

Hello there ,

if more people would have a wood stove ,
just been watching BBC , there was something about 3000 people a year die because of no being able to pay the energy bill .
That's how far we've got . Next there was a part about Aberdeen and the oil boom since 1975 , seen the Queen open the first
pipeline and it was said UK could be self sufficient for energy . Things changed since then ?
Now Eu is giving billins to Greece and let their own inhabitant's die of cold and hunger , nowaday's more people die from obesitas
than from hunger , what went wrong ?
