A vent and a rant more than advice seeking sorry folks but we have had a guest here for 8 days (not leaving for another two) and I am just going potty and unfortunately my family cops it a bit. luckily my boys are being fairly good but the guest in question winds them up, he is always teasing and being negative, sits around watching tv all day and talking about it (we don't do that- we only ever watch at night and don't talk all the way through it.)he was originally invited for a few days to help us with our move but instead booked tickets for a ten day stay three weeks after the move and is not the most motivated helpful person...
There is so much more but have to fit the rant in in between trying to amuse him so he doesn't keep talking through my writing and working and reading and cooking and to keep him away from the really really annoying TV.
I know I should be rising above it and so forth but finding it hard- houseguests do start to smell after three days after all!

I've found myself regretting agreeing to putting people up in the past few years, I really need to learn how to say no! That's just not fair, if oyu offer to come and help you come and help when it's needed, not take a free holiday!!! Only 48hrs to go...

Yep, been there, done that!!

We asked hubby's real dad & stepmum to visit us when we first moved here. This is where the father-in-law originates from & he's such a lovely man & his wife is a right sweetheart.... when you don't have to live with them!

They came for a fortnight & even on the last day were still asking 'is it ok to make a brew'? Yes!.. YES!! I told them 30 times a day, every day for 2 weeks, don't ask - help yourself!
Then there's my youngest who comes every year with her man.... within minutes of getting through the door, the slug trails start.... trainers in the middle of the hall, mascara/blusher/lippy on the table, sweat shirts on the chair, the wardrobe has ample empty hangers, the drawers are empty for her..... the floor is full! The loo roll disappears at a rate of 2 a day, bath towels left forlornly on the floor in a damp crumpled heap.... oh, but I miss her lots!!

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply and making me feel better- there is Solace in 'Ish!
You have hit the nail on the head there I think Julie (and Odsox who replied as I was typing!), we are too set in our own weird ways to put up with someone so very different changing the pace for so many days-we are determined to make the last days as enjoyable for everyone as possible now (my dearest darling-ist husband is feeling the same as me).
I feel I should be feeling bad, he was best man at our wedding and has had a rough time but he seems to have no intention of ever attempting to pull himself together and as well as putting him up for a holiday (and we did the same for 8 days in March with his 2 five year old girls to boot!) we have offered him a job, place to live, free use of cars, advice on his situation, moral support and yet it seems he would rather watch telly and moan about his ex- before you ask we don't actually think he is depressed- it just seems to be his personality which is now magnified!

Understand how you feel. We're not cut out for visitors either. OH's best friend comes for the weekend roughly 6 times a year and while he is easy guest, friendly etc it's still nice when he leaves.

Last time he was here he had been through a ferrel period in Wales somewhere. I heard the door, OH let him in and I could smell him from upstairs. I washed the bed linen twice after he'd gone.

AAAAAAAAH that's better!
After a lengthy delay (the plane was delayed arrrrrgh!) he has gone taking all his negativity, leaving lights on, pornographic stories from sexual encounters years ago, watching daytime tv and b*ching about his ex, his firends, his brother, his mum and his total inability to recognise what the words '' I just need a bit of time completely on my own for half an hour". Also gone are our offers of giving him a job, place to live and car to drive.
Ah well you live and learn, some people don't want help and do want to sponge without working!
