confusion at consumerism
we're looking for new pans; asking mum for them for xmas was disasterous and our anodised aluminium ones are showing desturbing signs of wear. coming from a family with a history of alzheimer's, I'm not taking chances...
I've been looking at Le Creuset pans on ebay, second hand cos we can't afford new Le Creuset, and why buy new when you can get it perfectly good second hand and cheaper?
I'm amazed, so many people are putting 'selling because they don't match my kitchen'.I mean this caused some serious Flibble confusion here. Le Creuset pans are the height of cookwear, incredibly expensive to buy new, and if looked after can last a lifetime or two; why would you sell them second hand for much less money than you obviously paid originally just cos they're the wrong colour?! sorry but I am totally confused by this lol.

Re: confusion at consumerism
Well we have still got our beautiful set of bright orange le cruest pans which we bought in 1988, they have been used continually since then on solid fuel Rayburn and log burner and still (apart from some staining inside) look like new.
They were very expensive to us at the time but have been one of our best buys.
As to colour, so what if people are that daft to keep changing pans because they change their decor more fool them

I still miss my big kitchen in France which was the most glorious mishmash of colours ever seen, incuding a lot of Le Creuset odds and ends which probaby turned up at the vide greniers and charity shops for the very reason you mention. I have red/orange, orange, green and blue. Can't wait to unpack them again soon!
I wouldn't worry about colours and get them anyway, their loss equals your gain!

Growing old is much better then the alternative!

Re: confusion at consumerism
The thought of a 'colour scheme' for my home has always been a concept that rather amuses me!
I suppose that's the difference between someone who's more than happy to breathe new life into old things, and those who change their furnishings / decor all the time.
There's a Mum at school who redecorates each room every six months, as she is so worried about being 'on trend' ( must cost her a fortune...
Maybe I'm just lazy? Or I don't like shopping enough to keep going out and getting new stuff ?!
Good luck with the pans, I am on the lookout, but not needing to buy yet, as we have a wood burning range, so would be interested to see what sort of prices they are fetching secondhand.

Re: confusion at consumerism
I you have Le Creuset pans that don't match the kitchen, and care about these things... Change the kitchen!
Their stupidity is your gain
Mind you, I'd be careful about letting everyone know there's a bargain like that in the offing *resists temptation to search ebay*

Re: confusion at consumerism
Hi all, I've never understood how people can be duped by sales patter about "seasonal decor" for your home! What nonsense! Surely, if you like something you keep it, and if you don't- you give it away to someone who will like it! Madness!
Mikey (my very handy landrover loving husband) suggests that people who owns Le Creuset kit that no longer matches their kitchen should take it and get it blasted and powder coated to suit the new colour scheme!
I hope the bidding is going well!

Also desperately trying to resist temptation to look on ebay - although I've never met a le creuset pan that I could lift empty, let alone full of food.

Re: confusion at consumerism
Very interesting thread, we have been discussing this a lot indoors recently as we r struggling to grasp peoples mind set with regards buying new!!! I don't get it, even if we did have the money I like to hope I wouldn't be sucked into such commercialism!!
We have just moved house from furnished to unfurnished so we had to start from scratch apart from the kids beds which we owned. We got r fridge freezer and washing machine of freecycle, they r silver the lady wanted white ones, they r 2yrs old! We got a solid pine bed of a friend who was going to skip it after buying a new orthopaedic jobby. Wasrdrobes and chest of drawers all came of freecycle and r like new!! Its amazing what people get rid off.
Back to your pots!! I've always dreamed of le cruset pots and about a year ago I answered an add on netmums for pots free to collector. We only owned one saucepan at the time so I was straight on the case!! Lol When I went to collect them there was 3 saucepans, frying pan and a griddle. They r similar to le cruset and the lady got them as a wedding present in the 50's!! They r the best pots ever and r still like new!! Goodluck with the bidding I'm sure u r really excited!! Let us know how u get on. Xxx

The Irony is that people who buy these pans new to match the decor, can't, in general, cook!
All fur coat and no knockers, I mean, knickers sorry. I am sure their door furniture is exemplary.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Re: confusion at consumerism
Interesting thread this one.
We have several sets of friends that are always buying new things. Love the items when first bought but within a year or so they feel a change coming on and I don't mean small items it includes large pieces of expensive furniture etc.
At the end of the day they work hard and its their money to do as they please. However, their loss is often our gain as their unwanted items usually come to us The funny part is when they come to visit us they see their "unwanted items" in our home and then wonder why they got rid of them in the first place By then though they are ours

Re: confusion at consumerism
What's worse is they all end up in houses that look exactly the same as each others! Nice brown sofas, laminate floors, cream rugs, magnolia walls, beech coffee tables and no personality! Give me a mish mash any day! We have very little new stuff in our house but everything is loved and well used. In fact, when we need (and sometimes want ) something new the first place we go is the charity shop/ebay/car boot sale!I've wanted a set of Denby crockery for my kitchen for as long as I can remember, but it's clearly not something I could really afford - have you seen the price of even second hand on ebay???? The other day I found 6 dinner plates, 6 breakfast plates and 4 tea plates for £4 at a boot sale! That's the set stated and with patience and pleny of charity shop and boot sale visits I'm sure there will be much more to go with it! Poor, sad, impatient consumers who are never happy with what they have and end up costing themselves a fortune!

Brilliant find! I am jealous! I've always fancied some nice Denby crockery too, but the price is shocking! Well done you!Milims wrote:I've wanted a set of Denby crockery for my kitchen for as long as I can remember, but it's clearly not something I could really afford - have you seen the price of even second hand on ebay????
