Marmite Outrage

:angryfire:

Perhaps the British government could respond by forbidding the import of Danish bacon on the grounds that much of it fails to meet basic animal wealfare standards and its production is an environmental hazard.

They won't, of course, being motivated only by grotesque moral cowardice and naked greed, but they could

They are also banning some breakfast cereals, think its all to do with the added vitamins that are added to these foods.

As to your comments about Danish bacon, I get so angry that we still get bombarded with the stuff. We have bought British meat for as long as I can remember and certainly would never ever buy Danish because of their poor animal welfare.

Good point! My son Ted (4) is ready to invade!
Seriously though, the Marmite thing is a bit of lunacy, their animal welfare standards something nearer depravity.

Have I mentioned I hate Marmite (I wonder if they've banned Vegemite too  )

Yes, they've banned Vegemite too and Kellogs cereals fortified with Vitamin B have been banned since 2004. Ovaltine also banned.

Ahem ... I do sort of agree with Denmark to a certain extent.
The UK government really do like to tamper with wholesome food and by extension give a green light to food manufacturers. Enforced dosing of synthetic vitamins every breakfast time washed down with a daily dose of fluoride sounds like a "good idea", plus a forecasted dose of folic acid in your home made bread and cakes.

Then of course you buy organic meat and veg or grow your own because you don't want nasty additives.

If they didnt 'fortify' breakfast cereals, then they would have virtually no nutritional content at all, as they refine it all out before adding some back to make it look like it's good for you.

What's this about folic acid?

Already happened in the US and now looks like it might happen in the UK too.

Thanks fior the link.

That's ridiculous. They intend to mass medicate everyone when it is designed to help prevent spina bifida - only pregnant women therefore need it! And it could make things worse for the elderly who could end up being B12 deficient - as a direct result of the folic acid additives! What planet are these people on??

At least they are going to leave wholemeal bread alone - which might encourage some people to buy that instead, if they dont like artifically 'enhanced' foods. Wholemeal flour already contains B vits in proper proportions!

Question is, will they put it in the bread, or in flour in general? Might become harder to avoid it if it goes in flour (wholemeal excepted of course)

A planet (country) where elderly people are expendable of course.

This whole thing has perked me up no end. :dontknow:

I think it must be because as I've read through the list I've realised I don't buy any of it (with the exception of one jar of Vegemite per month - to boost vegan daughter's Vit B levels!) - nor do I buy Danish bacon!

I know they (supposedly) add all these things to supplement the generally deficient Western diet but, as someone else has said, if they didn't take them out in the the first place they wouldn't have a problem. I'm with Odsox, although I think it's probably the pharmaceutical/food lobbies that push for it rather than the Government - they just cave to the pressure.

I've just thought of something. Do the pharmaceutical companies obtain the "waste" from the food refining industries to make their supplements or is it all lab made?

I'm not entirely convinced that nutritional deficiencies are an entirely modern, "Western" phenomenon. The idea that pre-modern people were all paragons of health enjoying healthy balanced diets is not supported by the evidence so far as I am aware. The field of osteoarchaeology clearly shows widespread nutritional deficiencies in many populations throughout much of history, at least since the development of agriculture. They just weren't severe enough to prevent at least some people from surviving to reproductive age.
Cheers
