Hi there,

I'm fairly new to this growing your own food thing, we have a typical town garden (long and narrow) but we have a 30 ft wall to the right of us (west that is) basically by 3.30 the garden is in shade are we off to a non starter? I was thainking of raising the beds to gain as much precious sunlight as possible, but I'm not sure this will be enough. Is it still worth trying?

Definitely go for growing veg - lots do OK in partial shade. And you can probably make use of the wall too - just find shade loving climbers.

I didn't know there was shadeloving veg!! I think we are goinf to raise the beds on the sunny(ish) Side and put troughs along the fence to grow salads in and herbs - its very sad but i'm really excited

If there's anywhere to put up hanging baskets that would get sun you could grow some yummy tumling tomatoes in them.

I second runner beans up the wall, also french beans. I grow both against my house and thats north facing.

Hi and welcome! Lettuce is always happiest in shade in mid summer as it bolts quickly in the sun.
