Spring is coming

While clearing the lawn this morning of kid's toys, dog's toys etc in preparation for mowing, I noticed that the first shoots of daffodils are just starting to show through. I will now have to avoid those spots for the next mowings, but nice to see all the same.

I just looked back through previous year's postings and they are quite a bit earlier this year, so hopefully that is a good sign.
Only once in the 16 years we've been here have they flowered in December, usually the first week of January but last year not until late January with the cold winter.

Oh fingers crossed its a sign of a mild winter to come. I love when the daff shoots begin to show and lambs begin to appear a sure sign that summer is just round the corner!!! Xx

next planted his broad beans and onions 2 weeks ago and they are up 2/3" already

I haven't even planted mine yet! Yes, believe it or not I don't yet have them growing in my garden. I keep planting them, but they never show I have cold, clay soil so I think they maybe just rot away over the winter instead of growing. Do you think if I plant them in Spring instead they might survive and provide me with flowers the following year?

A lot of mine go in after the dahlias come out which could be in November. I don't expect to see the first of the foliage until the time that Odsox's are flowering, or even later.

Rosey why not try planting your bulbs in large pots?

Afraid I'm with your neighbour on that MMM, early fruits and plenty of them normally show nature giving a helping hand to creatures to stock up for the winter.
Now if only I could find someone to knit me a good jumper!!

I have not even started planting next years daffs yet, I hope they aren't that early, at that rate they will be up before the snowdrops. I like a bit of barren winter to have a proper breather before it all starts over again.

Eek, not a chance up here! Although the anemones I planted have decided to come up now rather than in the spring which has annoyed me, silly nature - it's autumn not spring! Any advice, they're in pots, should I bring them in when it gets colder?

Sometimes my anemones show growth about December but don't flower until about March so I would leave them outside, though if it is very cold it may be worth wrapping the pots with bubble wrap to prevent the roots from freezing solid and harming the roots or putting in a cold frame.

Our fruit wasn't early, in fact our blackberries were really late, but I put that down to the early drought. I'm normally picking well ahead of those of you in the UK but this year we were much later!

I don't mind a cold winter but at least it would be nice to have a mild one this year after two harsh ones on the trot!

Oh god so do I!!! With all the fruit and veg and preserving, and now clearing the weedy mess that is the veg patch in order to plant out new strawbs and rejigging flower beds, I am knackered and am really, REALLY, looking forward to that breather! I want to start knitting again!
