What size replacement rubber seals for my kilner jars?

The whole reason for the selfsufficientish website was to offer a place where anyone can ask, HOW DO I...? So who knows why it has taken us so long to have a HOW DO I? section, but here it is. So if you want to know how to do anything selfsufficientish then here is the place to ask.

What size replacement rubber seals for my kilner jars?

Post: # 201230Post JillStephens7 »

Hello

I need to get some more rubber seals for some kilner jars (they are la parfait half litre ones) but can't work out what size I need.

Have looked at quite a few websites and in shops but they are sold in mm sizes and I can't measure my seals as they're all on jars at the moment. and can't find any that say they are suitable for the half litre kilner jars.

Please has anyone any idea how I can work this out (or maybe someone has the same jars and knows what size seals they use)?

Thanks, Jill

I've had a look around (and it was actually hard to find  ) and I'm no expert - but it appears that 85mm rings will fit any Le Parfait jar from 0.5 litres to 2 litres.

Lakeland sell them in packs of half a dozen or so. All but the smallest jars (175ml?) take the same size.

I had exactly the same dilemma. Stood pondering the huge range of rubber seals in our local supermarket wondering which to get - until a passing OAP took pity and pointed out that one size would fit both .5l AND 1l jars.

Thank you!

I got but off by several places saying this seal ONLY fits, then not listing my jars.

Just waiting for a couple of sales to end on fleabay to get the pennies in then shall get some. Used to have a great shop in the village that sold them (and knew what size jars they fitted) but is now a *bad fish & chip shop/ kebab place

*I don't mean morally bad, just they aren't very good at cooking food

While it has been answered, the information is on the Le Parfait website

I looked in my jam jar cupboard and there was a packet of 85mm rings saying they'll fit pretty much all sizes of bocaux and 350 terrines. 350 what I don't know though.

Just looked at that website - what bloody cheek they have - use the rubber seal only once. My ass! Just trying to make you spend a fortune. :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire: Mine get reused again and again and the only reason I bought more was because most of them smell of vinegar so I wanted some that didn't.

Me too, I only replace them if they won't stretch when I wash them. I take it as a sign they're starting to perish. :dontknow:

Can I ask a daft queston (and I think it's been asked before but I haven't looked for an answer...)

are Le Parfait jars - with the flip closure and rubber rings - suitable for for bottling fruit etc in the same way as Kilner jars are? I have some le Parfait but my preserving book only mentions kilner jars, which I understand are screw top rather than the flip metal closure on le parfait jars...

Yep! That's what we use for bottling tomatoes and other fruit as well as jams and pickles. They're fab, and last for ever! (Don't hold me to that  )

Brill! Are le Parfait jars strong enough to use in a pressure cooker? or just the water bath method?

Both, they are French and what the French use for bottling their haricot vert.

I only replace mine when I can't find my old ones!

I must have done some tidying at some point and as is often the case with tidying can't find a darn thing afterwards! You would think I would have kept them with the jars as usual but I remember thinking, "I know I'll put them ..." but alas there the memory ends
