Have to say it's quite funny really but whenever we are with any group of people I am always quite surprised to find other people smoking - I know from statistics there are supposed to be loads of people who still smoke but always imagine we are the only dreadful smelly smokers left!

Re: Quittin' Smoking
Allan Carr's book? Oh yes that has been discussed, again and again!
Well done anyway, it seems that this book (or similar) works for some and not for others. It worked for my brother in law but I suppose that as his partner doesn't smoke it was probably a little bit easier - my husband smokes so it's harder for me/us I think. We did stop together last year but failed miserably - and I've read the book 3 times now. Next time I am ever in the mood I will try some sort of nicotine substitute I think.

It disuades occasional/social smokers from lighting up - I know, as I was a social smoker, that I wouldn't want to stand out in the wind and the cold having a ciggy
It encourages others to stop??? for the same reason, but also, because I think it has drawn attention to the fact that it is actually a pretty anti-social habit these days. (I am sure some disagree)

Pretty obvious really, the health of the smoker!binaxa wrote:What are some arguments in favor of banning smoking besides secondhand smoke? Re: Quittin' Smoking
How about littering the streets? I was sitting outside a bar last week having a drink and even though there were ashtrays provided on the tables and a bucket of sand, smokers still threw fags on to the pavement and stood on them. One even used the hanging basket!binaxa wrote:What are some arguments in favor of banning smoking besides secondhand smoke? I need to write a paper and i need arguments to support banning smoking. Thanks Richie. I've deleted Binaxa so no problems now, well until the next spammer comes along.
Just re-read the thread and wonder how everyone who had just given up during the course of this discussion are doing?

Stopped, quite successfully, last October. Daughter moved up to live with us last week - bought a packet of fags yesterday

Re: Quittin' Smoking
Oh dear was it that bad?! I'm glad you live a long way away!
Seriously though, didn't it just make you feel sick and dizzy?
I tried using those nicotine inhalers but they are pretty awful - made me feel like I'd smoked a whole load of roll ups - could feel it all on my chest as well as an odd scratchy feeling in my throat.
Still smoking but the instructions were to cut down gradually whilst using the inhaler. Oh well won't try that one again.

Re: Quittin' Smoking
I'm smoking less for the most part. But getting tired of the cigarettes. Would like to quit them and go on the cigars full time.
Re: Quittin' Smoking
I stopped smoking last October and haven't had a cigarette since. I used the patches at first and then went on to the NiQuitin tabs. I have put on a stone in weight which certainly wasn't welcome! Now the weather is improving though I can eat more salad, get out in the garden and walk the dog for longer so hopefully the weight will come off. I am glad I did it. My cough stopped straight away, my skin looks so much better, my teeth are white, I don't smell (!) and I have sooooooo much more energy. It was the hardest thing I have ever done and I do still crave the odd one but a good strong cup of tea usually sorts that one out!
To everyone who is trying to give up, keep going, the benefits are amazing and once you've cracked it you feel that you can achieve anything! Good luck

Re: Quittin' Smoking
It's funny isn't it, one doesn't tend to think of cigar smokers as smokers. I always thought of my late step father as an ex smoker who had given up cigarettes 30 odd years previously and yet come to think of it, he smoked about 5 cigars a day!!!
As a cigarette smoker I think that cigars are vile smelly things and 2nd hand pipe tobacco just makes me feel physically sick
thankfully though I haven't come across either of the above here in France.

Yeah i know this all too well through experimentation and yes Molly they really do pen and ink, but, they can be enjoyable and better in ways to cigarettes. Well done Fran!SusieGee wrote:Be careful with that, years ago a guy I worked with gave up his 20 cigs a day habit and went over to the 'occasional' cigar - he ended up smoking almost as many of them as he had cigarettessoutheast-isher wrote:I'm smoking less for the most part. Re: Quittin' Smoking
I have been going with the pipe all week and it's great. Spending about 50p a day! I agree with MMM that pipe tobacco can be cloying but there are such a wide variety of types when it comes to pipe tobacco that some are cloying and some aren't. For anyone interested check this guy out on YouTube...

Re: Quittin' Smoking
An up-date (some 14 months on). My Jackie still can't do it & i've started again, so we have set a date for June 1st for a determined effort to quit. (May is not a good time of year for us). This time we are going to suceed ( or i'm going to shoot her!)..... will let you know how we get on. cheers Andrewpumpy wrote:Are there any ex-smokers out there? My Jackie is making yet another valiant attempt to quit, but she is struggling! Any words of encouragement from me are meaningless. She needs some practical advise from someone who has been there. ( we are now on day 4). Any herbal aids, or similar? In the past, she has taken a course of tablets( zyban, champex),to no avail. At the moment on patches, which were working last December, until a good friend of ours died (ironically, from cancer). Any ideas?

Re: Quittin' Smoking
Ahhhh Andrew. How about switching to a pipe? I smoke a fairly negligible amount now, and when a pipe isn't convenient i smoke a cigar or two... and it's still much cheaper than dirty cigarettes!
To be honest i'm in a very happy smoking place and god willing i'd like to carry on despite the risks.
