Boiler don't work, try warming it up!

Post: # 182550Post Andy Hamilton »

Tried to have a shower this morning and realised that our worcester condensing boiler was on the blink. It started making a real loud gurgling sound and sort of banging; all the time barley warming the water. Then it kept reseting itself.

I looked up this problem and found the way to cure it was to put a hot water bottle on the condensing pipe! It was due to this freezing. Is it just me or does heating up a boiler to make it work not seem right

When I fitted condensing boilers into house garages we put a thermostat onto the pipes for just that reason! DO you think it might be possible for you to lag the pipe to prevent it freezing agin. Oh and yes it does seem daft! lol

Took me a while to get my head around you in a rented house having a posh eco boiler running on barley then realised it was another classic Andyism.

Could be worse. At least you didn't have to put ice on it.

The people who fitted ours ran the pipe outside and after it froze up and stopped working ,we lagged the pipe and it seems to ok now.

During periods of very cold weather, people occasionally face the problems like boilers’ do not appear to be working. Sometimes this is to do with the condensate discharge pipe freezing and preventing the boiler from operating.
The following information will assist how can they solve if the boiler’s condense trap/discharge pipe has frozen.
you should try to reset your boiler. This can be done by holding in the ‘reset’ button (this can be found on the boiler control panel) for 10 seconds. Once you have released the button you should wait 2 to 3 minutes to see if the boiler refires.
The condensate pipe will be a plastic pipe, coming from the bottom of boiler. If this pipe is less than 32mm in diameter and runs outside of the property or through a non-heated area then it should be fully insulated with waterproof lagging.
A hot water bottle or heat wrap (like the ones that can be used to ease muscle discomfort) would be a suitable and safe way of thawing the condense pipe. Hold the hot water bottle or warmed heat wrap around the condensate pipe to thaw it.
Once thawed, you should still contact your installer in order to implement a permanent solution to the condense freezing.

If anyone out there has an oil boiler not firing up in this weather the try heating up the filter on the tank. We had some moisture in ours freeze which stopped to oil flow to the boiler.

Thats what happened to mine, and its still not playing :-(

Engineer called, due tomorrow but boiler has been off since 9 am yesterday and it was (only) -8 over night!

Second time in 10 days we've had the same problem. Pipes now lagged with a combination of foamy stuff from DIY store and bits from the rag bag. not very waterproof but it'll have to do in the mean time.
