Adverts on the site and cups of tea
Some of you have contacted me with regards to the adverts that appear around the site. We have changed nothing and still go through google. What has changed is who advertises. Last month google offered many websites £50 of free advertising, the result was a huge upsurge of adverts. Including non self sufficiency based ads. The way google works is by picking up on key words so if it finds a word in the text it will advertise that word. For example if it finds "cup of tea" many times in a text the ads will be for cups of tea. Lets try it by mention Cup of tea everytime I get a chance to write cup of tea.
This key word can be bypassed by advertisers with a lot of money who simply advertise everywhere. At the moment it seems to be the turn of "Loose your belly with this weird old tip". They must be pumping a fortune into web advertising as almost every site carries that ad. (and nothing about cups of tea).
I have just talked to John about this whilst both having a cup of tea and we have long said we would like to have adverts that fit in with Selfsufficientish. We have given a bit of free advertising to some businesses to try and do this but really we have to have ads to pay for the expense of running the site which is why we still have google ads.
But yes it is time to change this really, I don't think any of us that work on selfsufficientish are comfortable with many of the ads that have started to appear. So if you can suggest anyone that might benefit from some advertising on the site (or indeed if you want to advertise) we will offer competitive rates to members. So let me know by emailing or PMing me. We would rather change the ads too and then sit down and have a nice cup of tea.

I have seen that lose stomach fat ones everywhere too and got really annoyed when it showed up here! Especially as it was flashing in a very irritating way - I mean of the giving you a headache/hurts your eyes way. Well at least we didn't get the before and after photos like on all the weather sites. The ads up there at the moment are about high blood pressure and self catering accomodation in South Africa.

Hey ho - Firefox with the Adblock extra working here. I'm sorry Mr Google but I see no ads.
Re: Adverts on the site and cups of tea
That's all very well Flo, but if you click through these ads ish gets a wee bitty of money, which helps keep ish running. So every now and then you should click on a google ads to do your bit :)

Well sitting here with my cup of tea, I have to say I never click on the ads anywhere - I'd much prefer to donate to the site some other way (as indeed I do with a motorcyclers site)Annpan wrote:That's all very well Flo, but if you click through these ads ish gets a wee bitty of money, which helps keep ish running. Re: Adverts on the site and cups of tea
Andy, you can stop ads from certain sites by amending your Google adsense setup - login to Adsense then go to AdSense Setup then Competitive Ad Filter ... that may help.
Re: Adverts on the site and cups of tea
lol... see how the ads are about making m0ney fr0m Adz (trying to beat the search...lol) rather than a cup of tea, cup of tea cup of tea.....

Re: Adverts on the site and cups of tea
I'm not sure if anyone has 'cup of tea' on the list of phrases.... perhaps cup of coffee or maybe cup of cocoa

Re: Adverts on the site and cups of tea
I found it slightly amoozing that the ad at the top of this page as I was just reading it - while drinking a cup of tea of course - was for $marter ad(verti$sing) $erving (also trying to avoid the key word search thingy while I drink this cup of tea that looks remarkably like red wine)

Oh, now I notice Annpan has already pointed that one out (in a post I had read and even referred to) I'm not thinking straight right now: this cup of tea is strong stuff
