Every now and again something stirs me to action.
This decade its the issue of Green belt Encroachment.
I suppose I am so concerned because this is going to affect our quality of life so much but I believe the issue affects us all, in the UK especially, in the end.
When we moved to Cotgrave three years ago we were struck by how the village had kept a wonderful friendly rural nature despite a newer estate that brought the population to nearly 7,000. OK, it Cotgrave "Town", but there is no market, no bus station, no trains, just a couple of pubs, a terrific leisure centre , welfare club, three churches and a shopping centre. Oh. And a Post Office. Look us up on Google Earth.. its a peculiar set up.
Now its under threat.
The original small village and the sprawling coal mining generated 60's estate is surrounded by countryside on all sides. Its an odd concoction; acres of housing surrounding an ancient, Norman village supported by the original and some 60,s infrastructure. There is a police station but it is likely to be closed at times. No fire service... no ambulance service or hospital, but a medical centre of excellence... coping.
Look, ther's lots more to say but I could I ask you to look at this site?

It puts forward the voice of so many in the village.
You may have a swift response...
"Well people need somewhere to live!"
My questions are "What people.. declining? Who will buy? Why on Green Belt? Why build based on the wrong figures? Why not use existing empty homes? Why..." oh just go look for your selves. Knock us down in flames if you want. I have yet to hear of anyone at all supporting this rape of our land. A smidgin of argument would be refreshing!
I mean this... NO one yet has given me a good arguament as to why our valuable green belt land needs to be destroyed forever! No one has even tried!
I am not sorry to have bothered you with this. Its an issue that affects us all and should be addressed NOW before the contempt in which governments hold their electorates, well, gets worse!
The Cotgrave Action Group was inspired by the perceived experiences of a friend who, after leaving his village (clad only in a loin cloth and wode) in North Lincs years ago has returned yearly to visit relatives and watched, in lapse time, total destruction of the integrity of the community and settlement. The area is now an estate, formless and without soul. Divided enough from the City to have to make its own way. The infrastructure has been raped to such a degree that it is near collapse and no one wants responsibility. All character has disappeared as the estate grew. Many houses are unoccupied. It is a village estate without hope of market development and an estate agent's nightmare.
Green Belt Rape
Re: Green Belt Rape
Buy the land and dont build on it.
I'm not a hippie, I'm a realist.
I think everyones English

Re: Green Belt Rape
Thanks, but we are talking about a chunk of agricultural land big enough to build over 450 houses. There are many people opposed to the destruction of this land but I am not sure our collective piggy bank savings would stretch... I'll put your suggestion on the web site though. There might be a sympathetic philanthropist out there...
